What are the Charges?

Grand Theft Auto is a serious crime in California. It is when you take a car owned by someone else, without permission and without the intention of bringing it back. GTA may also occur if you attempt to lie or cheat someone out of their car.

The difference between grand theft auto and the lesser charge of joyriding is intent. Joyriding is seen as an impulsive act without intent to keep the car permanently whereas GTA is seen as a planned and premeditated act with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of the vehicle.

What If I’m Charged?

Felony grand theft may receive 16 month to 3 years in jail with up to $10,000 in fines.
