Shoplifting and Petty Theft Charges

Shoplifting, or larceny, is usually charged as petty theft in California if the value of the goods is under $950.

Shoplifting can be upgraded to the more serious charge of burglary when intent is brought into the equation. Shoplifting is more impulsive whereas burglary typically requires preparation and planning.

Penalties for Shoplifting

For first time offenses, the punishment is a fine of up to $1000 and/or 6 months in jail.
